Over the years, we have tried various products to find what works best for us, our dogs, and our breeding program. If you talk to 10 different breeders, you will gain a lot of knowledge as to what has worked for them. Not every breeder knows about a line of fantastic products that are made for breeders! It is called Breeder’s Edge.
Breeder’s Edge has a full line of products that will help breeders get from preparing a stud dog/female for mating, whelping a litter, and raising a litter.
The first product I would like to share is for the stud dog, Breeder’s Edge Oxy Stud.
As a breeder, you want to make sure that your studs stay in top form, inside and out! There will be times that the stud’s sperm count can go down and they need help in boosting it back up. There have been several products put on the market that claim to help with boosting the sperm count but I have been using this for several years and I know it works, I have seen the proof myself.
I had a beautiful male that passed all his health tests and then came the semen analysis. The vet said his sperm was just ok, but they would like to see a larger count and better mobility to help ensure he could be a successful breeder. I started him on Oxy Stud, as recommended by the vet, and kept him on it for two months. I then took him back to the vet to have his sperm checked again.
I am happy to say that the vet was very happy with the improvement she saw and told me to continue the Oxy Stud for the next few weeks until breeding him. I continued to give him the Oxy Stud right up to the day we bred him. Sixty-two days later he became a father to 8 beautiful and healthy puppies! Since this happened, I now use Oxy Stud for all my males regardless of whether they truly need it for increasing their sperm count, I believe in the product and have seen the beautiful results first hand.
My suggestion is when you are planning to use a male, Start giving him Breeder’s Edge Oxy Stud a couple of months prior to the breeding.
First, We recommend that you take him to the vet and have them collect him and look at the sperm to make sure there is no bacteria and to see the count, motility, and mobility of the sperm.
Once you know what you are working with, you can relax knowing that the stud is viable, hopefully, and you can go ahead with your plans to use him.
If there is a problem with his sperm, you can attempt to fix the issue well before using him on your female.
Breeder’s Edge® Oxy Stud™ is a dog and cat dietary supplement that contains a proprietary blend of vitamins, minerals, and all-natural herbs beneficial for the unique needs of male breeding animals during peak breeding season. Important antioxidants help repair damage to testicles and muscle tissue caused by the environment and aging. Herbal ingredients give males more stamina and make them stronger breeders. This exclusive formulation also promotes the overall reproductive health of normal, healthy males and aids in the improvement of semen production.
Ok now you have your male chosen, he is health tested, sperm checked, and he is ready to be bred. Bring in the dam. Hopefully, you have a successful breeding and around 32 days (that’s when I do it) you get an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. The results are good, and you have puppies! What’s next?
Now it is time to get her on a prenatal vitamin, but how do you choose? Some breeders use human prenatal vitamins. Some supplements with other variations of vitamins or another dog prenatal vitamin.
We use a product called Oxy Mate. Because it comes in soft chews or meat treats (mine love the meat treats best), it is very easy to administer. My girls all look at it as a treat and love them! This is way easier than trying to hide a pill or capsule in a piece of meat, cheese, or pill pocket.
If I try to hide a pill in something my dogs will eat the one part and spit the pill out. This can be very frustrating, to say the least. I can’t tell you how many times I have crushed a pill or opened a capsule and mixed it into their food, dissolved it in water, or added it to some peanut butter only for them to refuse the preparation! Then the only option you are left with is to open their mouth and push it down their throat while being careful not to get a tooth poke or worse.
Having a vitamin that tastes good to them is a blessing! Prenatal vitamins are very important to pregnant animals just like humans! The puppies take vitamins and nutrients from the mother so supplementation is vital for healthy mommas and babies!
Breeder’s Edge® Oxy Mate™ Prenatal is a proprietary blend of vitamins, minerals, and selected herbs that are formulated for the specific nutritional needs of pregnant females and her developing embryos. This premium prenatal supplement provides elevated levels of iron, folic acid, and zinc that optimizes the production of red blood cells and blood flow. In addition, this supplement provides essential nutrients for the development of healthy newborns. Herbal ingredients are added to improve uterine tone and to ease birthing.
Now I stop the Oxy Mate a couple of days before the dam is due to deliver and switch her to another Breeder’s Edge supplement called Oxy Momma.
As important as the prenatal vitamin is, it is just as important to give additional vitamins to a whelping and lactating momma.
Oxy Momma has multiple benefits! One thing it does is that it aids in putting some f the essential vitamins and minerals back in the momma after losing so much in the whelping process.
It also helps support healthy milk production and helps put her hormones back where they should be.
I have seen a better ‘bounce back’ in my females since I have been using this supplement. Just like with the Oxy Mate, Oxy Momma, this comes in soft chews or meat treats!
If you think that it is hard to get a female to take a pill when pregnant, try giving them one while their appetite is poor after whelping puppies!
I love Breeder’s Edge products for their ease of use and the quality of all their products! Most importantly, the dogs love them and I never have a problem with administering.
This proprietary blend of vitamins, minerals, and specific herbs is designed to meet the special needs of the lactating mom. Antioxidants help with reproductive tract recovery. The herbal ingredients stimulate milk production, help a female recover from birthing, and align reproductive hormones to help get them ready for the next gestation. Begin approximately 3 days before birth.
For the birthing mother, most breeders know that the whelping process depletes calcium from the momma, with every pup that is born.
Many old school breeders will give the mommas Calcium pills after each pup (the amount and frequency depend on the size of the momma and the number of pups she births).
Low calcium can be very dangerous for the female and the pups. The female can be aggressive towards pups, reject her puppies, or stall labor.
According to “Stalled Labor and Delivery Problems in Dogs” Vladimir Negron (petmd.com. Nov 12, 2010): “in some animals, the biochemistry profile may show abnormally low levels of calcium and blood glucose. Calcium is essential for proper contractions of the muscles, including the uterine muscles. If the blood is low in calcium this will be indicative of the direction the treatment will need to go.”
To help alleviate or prevent low calcium, Breeder’s Edge Oral Cal Plus, is an easy and effective way to keep the female’s calcium up.
Pills can be given but a lot of dogs do not want to take pills even if you hide them in some cheese or peanut butter and you likely don’t want to stress the momma by forcing them down her throat if you don’t have to. Other breeders use Tums.
But, again, you must get the female to eat them when she likely wants nothing to do with any food of any kind. However, it is vital that you can get calcium in her! I have heard other breeders say that they feed their whelping mommas’ cheese or vanilla ice cream to help replace calcium. Again, most mommas are not interested in eating anything during delivery.
While she is having puppies, she will likely have no appetite. Think about it, have you ever heard of a human female asking for something to eat while they are in labor? Probably not! This means it is difficult to get them to eat anything at all! This is what makes Breeder’s Edge Oral Cal so convenient. It comes in an easy to dose syringe and is a gel that makes it a lot easier to administer than pills. It also absorbs into their system way faster than a pill.
Breeder’s Edge® Oral Cal Plus™ Gel is a calcium supplement for whelping dogs and queening cats. Oral Cal Plus gel provides 3 calcium sources to support strong and normal contractions. This calcium gel for dogs and cats contains vitamins D3 and B6 to support calcium absorption while MCTs and dextrose support mental alertness and energy levels. Calcium impacts dilation, contractions and her mood, making Oral Cal Plus Gel a must-have for every whelping kit. Made in the USA with globally sourced ingredients.
The last Breeder’s Edge product that I want to share is my favorite of them all! This product I’m about to introduce you to have seen it save a puppy on more than one occasion! Sometimes pups are born, and they are lethargic and/or just don’t have the energy to suckle on momma.
Breeders Edge Nurture Mate gives newborns the added edge that they need to get to suckling! It is made the same way as the Oral Cal plus, in the easy to calibrate tube that you can squirt the gel right into their mouths.
Prior to placing the puppies on the momma’s teets, we actually like to give each puppy a dose!
But If we have a puppy that doesn’t seem to be staying attached to a nipple or just not eating as they should, we give them another dose. Unless there is something else that is wrong with the puppy, it works!
Breeder’s Edge® Nurture Mate is rich in colostrum, protein, and other beneficial nutrients. This easy-to-use gel is just what you need to help get puppies, kittens, and foals off to a healthy start in life. Provides newborns with the energy to nurse aggressively and obtain their needed nutrition. An alternative source of colostrum, it helps support a strong immune system in the first days of life. Comes in calibrated syringes for easy and accurate dosing.
Everyone here at The Breeders Spot, highly recommends all of the Breeder’s Edge Breeding Supplements. I believe in their efficacy and I have experienced the positive results of each one! Honestly, I have been using each of them for several years of successful breeding.
Do yourself a favor and try them out!
